New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite was one of the first to respond to the news, calling it "a major milestone for the game."

"Exposing the women's game to such a global audience and being part of an event as prestigious as the Commonwealth Games is a big boost to a moment of real momentum," he said. "Having the opportunity to play against countries that we don't normally participate in at this time will be unique and only something good for the growth of the game."

The game’s growth and growing popularity were key factors in the first independent ICC Women’s World T20 launched in the Caribbean at the end of November, with another edition to be held in Australia in March 2020.

"This is a truly historic moment for women's cricket and for the global cricket community, who have participated in supporting this offering," said ICC chief Manu Sawhney. "Women's cricket is getting stronger, and we are delighted and honored that the Commonwealth Games Associations voted to include T20 cricket for women in Birmingham 2022.
